Our real numbers through October 16, 2026. All amounts are in US dollars.

A premium credit card is easy to justify when you add up every benefit on the brochure. The more useful question is: how much of it do you actually use?

For us, the American Express Platinum Card has delivered $2,575.71 in credits and redeemed points so far this year.

That includes $1,697.44 in credits and $878.27 in purchases and statement expenses paid with Membership Rewards points. We have kept those categories separate because they tell different parts of the story.

This is our experience of using the US consumer Platinum Card, including the benefits we have used, the ones we have left on the table, and what we would consider before applying.

Referral disclosure: If you apply through our referral link and are approved, we may receive Membership Rewards points at no additional cost to you. Using our link does not add any fees to your application or card; the card’s standard fees and terms still apply. Any welcome offer available to you is subject to American Express eligibility and offer terms.

The credits alone exceed our annual fee

We paid $895 in annual fees for our US consumer Platinum Card.

Compared with that fee, our $1,697.44 in credits represents $802.44 more in value received, before including any points redemptions.

That is value we received above the annual fee we paid. Your own calculation should use the fee actually charged to your account, including any additional card fees.

Here is what we have received so far:

Benefit or creditValue received
Resy dining$400.00
Hotel credit$300.00
Digital entertainment$209.00
Airline fees$20.00
lululemon$75.00
CLEAR+$219.00
Walmart+ membership$141.00
Uber Cash, January–October$150.00
Uber One membership, January–October$99.90
Seasonal dining credits$11.01
Saks Fifth Avenue$50.00
NBA Store$12.00
Dyson$1.74
Intuit$5.00
Amex Venue Collection$3.79
Total credits received$1,697.44

These are amounts we received, rather than the maximum advertised value of each benefit. Some are recurring Platinum benefits; others are purchase-specific credits. The smaller credits should not be treated as benefits every applicant will receive.

Everyday benefits make a difference

Travel gets much of the attention, but dining, entertainment and transport account for a meaningful part of our total.

We have received $400 in Resy dining credits and $209 in digital entertainment credits. Walmart+ membership credits add another $141.

Uber is a good example of how smaller amounts build up. We used the $15 in Uber Cash every month from January through October, bringing that total to $150.

Separately, ten months of Uber One membership at $9.99 a month added $99.90 in credits. Together, those two benefits have delivered $249.90 so far.

They are separate benefits, so it is worth checking that both are set up correctly. Amex currently provides up to $200 in Uber Cash annually, distributed as $15 each month plus an extra $20 in December. Conditions apply, and unused monthly Amex Uber Cash does not roll over. See the current benefit terms.

The useful test is whether a benefit fits spending you already expect to make. A credit that encourages an unnecessary purchase is not the same as money saved.

Travel credits contribute without using every allowance

Our travel-related credits include $300 for hotels, $219 for CLEAR+, and $20 for airline fees.

We have not used every available allowance. The airline fee credit, for example, has contributed only $20 to our total so far. Counting the full advertised amount would overstate what we have received.

The same care applies to hotel bookings. A credit can reduce the bill, but the overall room rate and booking conditions still matter. It makes sense to compare the eligible booking with the alternatives before deciding whether it offers good value.

Points have covered another $878.27

Alongside the credits, we have used Membership Rewards points to pay for:

Points redemptionExpenses covered
Paid shows on Amazon Prime Video$91.89
Amex Travel purchases$213.00
Statement expenses$573.38
Total points redeemed$878.27

Those are actual dollar amounts covered by our points, rather than an estimated valuation of an unspent balance.

Redemption options can provide different values per point. These figures describe how we used ours; they are not a claim that these methods produce the highest possible value.

They also do not mean all those points were earned this year. Points redemptions depend on an existing balance, spending and any eligible bonuses. For that reason, our clearest annual-fee comparison starts with the credits alone.

Combined, our credits and points redemptions come to $2,575.71.

Hotel benefits add value beyond the credits

The $2,575.71 total does not capture everything we get from the card. Hotel benefits are a good example: we use them, but have not assigned them a dollar value in our calculation.

Eight stays where hotel status matters

We choose Marriott and Hilton where possible. So far this year, we have stayed at Marriott properties six times and Hilton properties twice.

Through our Platinum Card, we have enrolled in Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite and Hilton Honors Gold status. That gives us access to room upgrades at eligible properties when available at check-in, subject to each program’s rules. An upgrade is not guaranteed on every stay, but these are benefits we can put to use across our travels—not just status badges sitting in an account.

We have not added an estimated upgrade value for each of those eight stays to our total. The value depends on the property, the room and what is available when we arrive.

Our Vancouver stay shows what comes with a hotel booking

The hotel statement credit is only one part of the value of an eligible Amex Travel booking. The card offers up to $300 per half-year toward eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings. We have received $300 so far this year.

We stayed at Hyatt Vancouver Downtown Alberni in Vancouver, BC, for two nights, August 19–21, 2026, booked through Fine Hotels + Resorts. The listed hotel-program benefits included:

  • Daily breakfast for two.
  • A $100 property credit toward eligible charges, which can include dining, spa or other on-property purchases, depending on the hotel.
  • Guaranteed 4pm checkout.
  • Noon check-in and a room upgrade on arrival, when available.
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi.

Our two-night Fine Hotels + Resorts booking at Hyatt Vancouver Downtown Alberni, August 19–21. Confirmation numbers and guest name redacted. The reservation screen shows standard hotel times; the separate program benefits include guaranteed 4pm checkout.

Those extras come on top of the eligible hotel statement credit. Breakfast for two, a property credit and more time before checkout can make a meaningful difference to a trip. None of these additional hotel-program benefits is included in our $2,575.71 total.

Our Vancouver booking was through Fine Hotels + Resorts with the Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits listed above. The Hotel Collection has different terms: it requires at least two consecutive nights and includes a $100 credit toward eligible charges, with upgrades and early or late checkout subject to availability. Daily breakfast and guaranteed 4pm checkout are not standard benefits of both programs. Check the program and property details before booking.

We still compare the full booking price with other options. These extras are most useful when the hotel and total cost make sense for the trip we want to take.

Seasonal Amex Offers add another way to save

Beyond the regular card benefits, the Offers tab in the Amex app is worth checking before a purchase. It features changing, limited-time deals across dining, travel, shopping and services, with rewards such as statement credits or extra Membership Rewards points.

Here are examples that appeared in our account in October 2026:

Offer shown in our accountPotential reward
BoqueriaSpend $75 or more, get $20 back, up to twice ($40 total)
JetBlueSpend $300 or more, get $60 back
Cracker BarrelGet 10% back on a single purchase, up to $6
Airbnb Experiences and ServicesSpend $80 or more, get $20 back
adidas.comEarn 6 additional Membership Rewards points per eligible dollar, up to 5,000 points

These are examples of available offers—not rewards we have already earned. Availability varies by card member, each offer has its own terms and expiry date, and these deals may have ended by the time you read this. Amex Offers are also available on other eligible Amex cards; they are not exclusive to Platinum.

The practical tip is simple: check for an offer before spending, add it to your eligible card, then pay with that same card and meet the offer’s requirements. Check eligible purchases, booking channels, spending thresholds and deadlines in the full terms. See how Amex Offers works.

Our recorded purchase-specific credits so far include $12 from the NBA Store, $1.74 from Dyson, $5 from Intuit, $3.79 from Amex Venue Collection and $11.01 in seasonal dining credits—$33.54 in total, already included in our headline numbers.

We also received the former $50 Saks Fifth Avenue benefit earlier this year. That was a separate card benefit, not one of these seasonal offers; it ended on July 1, 2026 and remains in our total as value already received.

A well-timed offer can bring down the cost of something you already planned to buy. That is when these deals are most useful.

What we have not used yet

There are still gaps between the annual allowances and the credits we have received for hotels, airline fees, digital entertainment and lululemon. Some monthly or quarterly portions may already have expired.

We used every monthly Uber Cash allocation through October; another $50 is scheduled across November and December and is not included in our total. We have also assigned no dollar value to lounge access or dining reservation access here.

The distinction matters: some benefits remain unused, while others—including our hotel status and hotel-program extras—add value beyond the credits we have counted.

How to decide whether it works for you

Before applying, build your own short list:

  • Start with existing spending. Which eligible subscriptions, dining, transport or travel purchases would you make anyway?
  • Check enrollment and payment requirements. Holding the card does not automatically activate every benefit.
  • Check the deadlines. Monthly and quarterly credits require more attention than an annual allowance.
  • Count value realistically. Allow for extra spending, price differences, card fees and any interest charges.
  • Treat points separately. Your likely rewards will depend on your own spending and redemption choices.

For us, the combination has delivered value well beyond our $895 annual fee. Your result will depend on how closely the benefits match your habits.

Considering an Amex Platinum?

If these benefits line up with how you already spend and travel, the Platinum Card is worth a closer look.
